My Life at MU

I can't wait to see MU (who doesn't like a pun?)

This spring, Mrs. Wendy Vonnegut the Legal Studies department head, has asked me to come and help one of her mock trial teams. And I am excited. The mock trials were always my favorite time of year.

One of the benefits of the Legal Studies minor is the opportunity to take an active role in two mock trials. One of the trials is criminal and the other civil. These trials allow students to see the law in a practical application. Additionally, these trials help students become better prepared speakers and extemporaneous speakers. This year, the trial will transcend the Legal Studies department and includ e cooperation with Justice Studies department. Students from that department will actually be creating the forensic evidence for use at trial. Also, students who are acting as police officers for the trial will creating their own police reports.

I am happy Mrs. Vonnegut invited me back this year to help. If things go well, hopefully I will be invited back again. The bi-annual mock trials typically generate a great deal of excitement in the Trustee's building, and I am happy to be invited back to participate.

Life At MU

     Things are going really well at MU right now.  Classes are going well and I am doing really well in them too!  I have been really busy working with SGA and serving as Chief Justice of Student Community Court.  We at the SGA have been really busy with working on different issues on campus, like trying to make the campus more Green.  We have formed a special committee to deal with different matters regarding turning the campus more Green. We at student Court have gotten many cases from students who have appealed their ticket. This is a really great experience for the justices, student lawyers and myself.  We try to run the Court as a real Court would be ran. - Chris

Homecoming

     I had a blast at this year's homecoming! I had a great time at the football game because I was really busy working at two tables that the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and SGA sponsored.  Our Law Fraternity took donations to help raise money for a low income school near our campus.  The SGA had a table with a carnival type game for everyone to play and we gave away free candy and drinks too.  One of the best things about homecoming is seeing friends that you have not seen in a while that have graduated.  I really had a great time at the homecoming dance as well.  I know that I will have to come back to as many homecomings as possible after if graduate!! - Chris

Coming home

It is my goal to return to Methodist at least twice a year. Saturday, will mark my fall semester visit and I am elated. The weather is supposed to be a nice 70 degrees, the football team is playing Ferrum and I can't wait to see my friends again. It'll be good to be back around the collegiate football atmosphere. The fans, the food, the game, the competition thick in the air. It's going to be amazing, it is hard to even begin to describe the electricity in the air right before kick off. The cacophony is truly euphonious; the music blares, the pep band plays, and the murmur of the crowd ready to watch spectacle all in eager expectation. I spent the most memorable falls at Methodist playing before that same crowd, and I can't wait to experience a part of that again. - Rhyan

The Gospel of Methodist U

I have started going to my fiancee's church. It's a little church, way back in the woods with a weekly congregation of about 80 people or so. It's one of those churches where everyone knows everyone else, and their families, and their family's families. Sunday, I went to church, and as I walked in, one of the women of the church stopped me and told me that she had a picture of me. This struck me as odd because, why would she have a picture of me? And then she gave it to me, it was the Methodist viewbook. There I was laughing in class, and pushing my nose off to the side. After church, she asked me to do something I hadn't done in a long time. She asked me to tell her son all about Methodist. It was then I realized how very difficult it was to properly articulate everything I ever wanted to say about Methodist in a small amount of time. So, I proceeded to tell him all about the benefits of a liberal arts education, and the benefits of small class size, and just tell him the good news about Methodist. That was all I had time to tell him. Luckily, he is coming to visit the campus, as you all should. Methodist is really not something that can be explained, rather it is something that should be experienced. - Rhyan

Long time no see

People are used to seeing others in a certain environment. For example, you expect to see your teachers at school, your parents at home, and so on. Imagine how odd it is on the occassion that you run into your teachers outside of school, say at the mall. Imagine how even more uncomfortable it would be to run into your parents at the mall by happenstance. Recently, I ran into Clifton Bobbitt, a resident director at Methodist. While I was at Methodist I had the pleasure of working as an RA, never under Cliff directly, but as a member of the residence life staff at Methodist. It struck me as odd that seeing Cliff outside of Methodist didn't strike me as odd at all. It was actually rather comforting to see a friendly Methodist face again. I suppose the point I'm making is that the relationships you make, and you will make relationships, with the faculty and staff at Methodist are lasting and comfortable. The disconnect between student and superior is smaller at an institution such as Methodist and is something that should be valued. - Rhyan

Here we go!!

It is that time again, time to start classes.  Although the summer was great, I was ready to get back to school and see my friends again.  This summer I worked with my father most of the time, but it  allowed me to meet up with some old friends that I had not seen in a while.  I also went on a mission trip to South Carolina where I helped rebuild two houses that were dilapidated.  This trip was a wonderful experience for me.  I  believe that this will be my best year of my life, so far!!

And so it begins...

And we're off! The school year has officially begun!  Today was registration day and the campus was buzzing with activity.  Students headed to Berns to get their IDs, parking permits, and books.  I actually had my first class at 2 PM today--Honors 301 with Dr. Walsh.  I'm also taking Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Quantitative Analysis and Honors Special Topics.  I think it will take a while for me to get back into the swing of things, but I'm ready (I don't really have a choice, now do I?)  Don't forget about the group advisee meeting this Friday at 11, and good luck in your first weeks of classes!

End of Junior Year

I can not believe it, but I am getting ready to end my junior year of college.  To be completely honest the time has flown by so quickly.  It is kind of a bitter sweet moment for me at this point in time.  I am happy that I am getting ready to complete a goal that I have always set for myself, but it is sad  that I will be leaving the place that I have grown to love some much.  I will not only miss the campus but most importantly I will miss the faculty and students here as well.  But I still have one more year to make the best of what college has to offer.  I have to live each day next year like there will not be another one like it again. - Chris

Senator Clinton

As you may have heard from another blogger Sam and the news, Senator Hillary Clinton came and spoke at Methodist yesterday.  I personally do not support Clinton but I still attend the rally to get a better idea of her view of our military and her plan for Iraq.  What was great about her coming was that she was basically in our backyard!! Not many people can say that!! As a Political Science student, it allows me to get involved into politics while I am still in college.  Overall it was a great experience for me. - Chris
