Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton visited Methodist University on Thursday, April 24, 2008.  Other students and I prepared for her arrival by setting up chairs and signs all over the gymnasium.  Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community gathered to show their support.  Clinton maintained her "Strong Army" campaign by focusing mostly on issues important to the military community.  The crowd was excited to hear that she was willing to participate in a debate with the other candidates in North Carolina. After her speech, she held a questionnaire session where people asked about health insurance, veterans’ hospitals, and college tuition .  This event was a success and Methodist University was honored to have Hillary Clinton as a guest at our school.Hillary1 - Samantha

Athletic Banquet

This year Methodist University invited LaTasha Colander-Clark, two-time Olympian, as a guest speaker for the annual athletic banquet.  The banquet is always a time to recognize each teams’ achievements and say good-bye to the seniors.  The male and female Outstanding Senior Athletes of the Year award went to Men’s Golf, Nick Bova, and Women’s Golf, Katie Dick.  Methodist’s Athletes had an amazing year with 115 scholar athletes and four USA South Conference Champions.  A new event to the banquet called “Jock Jamz” was added this year.  The football team sang their version of the Fight Song and the women’s basketball team danced to their own mix of songs.  The banquet was a success and good luck to all the seniors! - SamanthaAthbanq

Spring Season

The Methodist cheerleading squad finished their season in Daytona Beach, Florida last week.  It was a good year and we had fun saying our good byes at Nationals.  However, other spring sports are still in season.  The baseball, softball and tennis teams are away this weekend for USA South Athletic Conference Tournaments.  Congratulations to the Methodist Athletes that have already received USA South awards, like women's tennis Freshman Kaitlin Flaherty for Rookie of the Year and men's golf Senior Nick Bova for Player of the Year honors.  The student athletic banquet will be held Tuesday, April 22 in the Riddle Center.N162600372_30222785_225_3

Basketball Season

Methodist students are leaving their dorm rooms and heading to the Riddle Center.  The number of students who are attending the basketball games this season is growing.  Both the men and women basketball teams are soaring to the top of the conference standings with hopes of winning the conference championship.  I know the cheerleaders are having a blast this season and wishing the best of luck to both teams.  I encourage everyone to come to all the special events coming up in the few games we have left.  This Wednesday is “Take a Kid to the Game” and Valentines Day is the “Think Pink Game” dedicated to raise breast cancer awareness.  This year clubs and organizations are gathering for the Monarch Zone before the games.  The Student Government Association has been doing a great job with this by sponsoring games and free prizes.  So when you get a chance, come out and support the 2007-2008 Methodist Basketball teams!

Christmas Break

After I finished my last final, other students and myself said good bye to some graduating seniors. On December 8th family and friends gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate the graduates of Fall 2007. Then we all packed and went our separate ways for our Christmas Breaks.  I have returned home to Pennsylvania where I am spending my holidays with my friends and family.

I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. - Samantha

Fayetteville Christmas Parade

The 2007 Methodist University Homecoming Queen and Ms. Methodist road along with the International Club through downtown Fayetteville sharing their Christmas spirit.  This year the International Club from Methodist University created a beautiful float for the Fayetteville Christmas Parade.  They decorated their float with their Countries’ flags and a backdrop that read “Peace on Earth.”  King (the MU mascot) and Methodist Cheerleaders led the float with big smiles and school spirit.  - Samantha

MU Students Volunteer

Methodist University has been shining with kindness this semester.  Students have been volunteering hours of their time and donating food and presents to the less fortunate.  It all started with the Student Athlete Advisory Council collecting cans for the annual “Cans across the Conference.” This year Methodist came in 6th place in the conference by collecting 1,509 canned goods.  Then, students cut wood for the needy at the Jesse Smith Memorial Woodcutting.  This project is my favorite.  I really enjoy delivering stacks of wood to families all over Fayetteville.  Another project at Methodist University was the “Operation Christmas Child – A Project of Samaritan’s Purse.”   Methodist served as a popular drop-off site for the organization.  Students and volunteers collected, boxed, and shipped shoeboxes filled with toys and personal items for children all over the world.  These events are just some of the great things students at Methodist University are doing for the community and the less fortunate. - Samantha

Fall Semester

The fall semester is flying by.  Everyone has been keeping busy with classes and endless activities.  After everyone survived midterms, we enjoyed a few days off for fall break.  The Student Activities Committee has been entertaining Methodist with some amazing events like the Womanless Pageant and the Hollywood themed Homecoming.  Last weekend, students enjoyed the many different athletic games that took place as part of Homecoming.  Christopher Newport came back after half time to beat the Monarch Football team 24-17.  The Volleyball team won 3-0 over Shenandoah, but lost to Averett 0-3.  While the Methodist guys Soccer team dominated Randolph-Macon 2-0 and the women's soccer team stayed undefeated in conference, winning 2-0 over CNU.  This year, MU clubs and organizations are gathering to show their school spirit.  The Monarch Zone (the tailgating area for home football games) has been packed with clubs like the Student Government Association, the Accounting Club, ACHE and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.  Even Radio stations like 96.5 The Drive have come to show their support.  The Monarch Zone has been full of fun games, face painting, and delicious food.  The semester is not over yet and great events are still to come.  Everyone support the Student Education Association Bake Sale on October 24th and the Basketball and Cheerleading teams at Hoopla Frenzy on October 25th.  See ya soon! - SamanthaFball_cheer_4

Cheer Camp & Back to School

Cheerleading camp, once again, was a scorcher.  On campus we conquered the 110-degree heat through our pre-camp conditioning.  Coach Melissa Hay helped cool all the teams down with some intense yoga.  A few days later the All Girl, Coed, Dance team, and mascot traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC for the  NCA College cheerleading Camp.  This was the first year that Methodist had so many teams at camp.  We blew everyone away with our new numbers and our overwhelming spirit.  Both the All Girl and Coed teams received bids to the NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, FL.  Never experiencing camp before, the All Girl team surprised everyone with all Superior ribbons (including a perfect score) and a Most Improved award.  The mascot, also new to camp, was named All-American and received the Most Collegiate Mascot in the competition against Division 1 teams.  Our smallest team with the biggest hearts is our Dance team, who was also presented with a Most Improved award. It was a long two weeks, but we all managed to come out on top with smiles on our faces and three spirit sticks.  With all three teams, we have a lot of new talent.  Everyone has been pulling together and preparing for our seasons to begin.  I feel that these teams will only be the beginning of a new and improved cheerleading program at Methodist University.
